Plan Ahead to “Fall Back”: Strategies to Adjust Your Baby or Toddler’s Sleep for Daylight Savings

We all remember the days—perhaps not so long ago—when the end of Daylight Savings Time meant getting an extra, glorious hour of sleep, thanks to the clocks “falling back.” But now that you have a baby or toddler, it’s not so simple. Little ones can’t sleep-in just because the time on the clocks has changed. But don’t worry, Baby Sleep Science is here to help! In these two FREE webinars about handling the end of Daylight Savings Time with a baby or toddler, we'll teach you how to navigate the time change without stress or sleep loss—for you and your little one.

In these pre-recorded webinars, taught by Baby Sleep Science co-founder Erin Flynn-Evans, PhD, MPH, you’ll learn the science behind how the DST shift can affect your baby or toddler’s sleep, and why it can be so challenging for your little one to adjust to the new time. After watching these brief audio-visual presentations (each one is less than 15 minutes), you’ll also understand:

  • How to manipulate light exposure to shift your baby or toddler’s circadian rhythm later to match the new time

  • How to plan ahead with a gradual-shift strategy (which works for babies older than 4 months, as well as toddlers and preschoolers) to align your child’s sleep schedule with the time change

  • How to wing it at the last minute with a “slam-shift” strategy (recommended for older toddlers or preschoolers only)

  • How to use the time change to shift your little one’s bedtime earlier (hint: you don’t have to do anything!)

We know these transitions aren't always easy! That’s why we offer a variety of resources, so you can choose the one that works best for you and your family.
